We were hired for this project because of our prior experience with historic renovations, and our ability to stay on schedule. We were responsible for waterproofing and painting the exterior of the entire property.
This is hometown work for us. We're a Mobile-based crew, just a short drive from the Government Street historic corridor and the older districts downtown, and we take protecting the city's public buildings seriously. On the Gulf Coast — with the humidity and wind-driven rain that come off Mobile Bay — an exterior on a historic building lives or dies by the prep underneath it, which is why waterproofing came first on this job.
Project type: Commercial Exterior Painting + Waterproofing
Location: Mobile, AL
Why waterproof before painting a coastal building?
On a humid, rainy coast, water is the real enemy of an older exterior, so on this project we waterproofed before we painted. Wind-driven rain and the steady moisture rolling off Mobile Bay get into masonry and woodwork and lift a finish from behind, no matter how good the paint is. Sealing those surfaces first gives the coating a sound, dry base to bond to, so it holds for years instead of peeling by the next rainy season. That prep-first order is how our exterior painting and commercial painting crews protect buildings across Mobile County.
