The Joshua Kennedy Home sits at 607 Government Street in Mobile, Alabama. It was built in 1857 by Joshua Kennedy, Jr., and its façade features an unusual full-height portico that has been described as a transition between the Greek Revival and Italianate styles.
The home is owned by The 1857 Foundation, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organized by local business professionals who saw a need to save the structure. In the fall of 2019, the foundation completed a full restoration of the home in the Church Street East historic neighborhood of downtown Mobile.
Pro 1 Painters assisted in restoring the plaster walls and crown molding, and in painting both the interior and exterior of the structure. Here is how Mobile Bay Monthly described the finished work:
The plaster walls and crown molding were fully restored. The house features 14-foot ceilings, seven fireplaces, a beautiful bay window, arched windows and doors, and the original sweeping staircase along a plaster radius wall in the grand hallway. In February 2017, the foundation successfully acquired the property from the Lamar Y. McLeod American Legion Post 3, which occupied the house from 1948 to 2017.
Allan Gustin, a local commercial contractor and chairman of the design committee that oversaw the restoration, called the foundation's partnership with the American Legion one of the project's most unique aspects, allowing the Legion to keep using the building for meetings and events for ten years at no cost. "My father was a veteran," he said, "and it's important to us as a group to support men and women who served in our armed forces."
